The IUCN, in collaboration with the ICMM (International Council on Mining & Metals) have produced this booklet of case studies from around the world to illustrate what can be done in the mining sector to support biodiversity conservation.
The case studies fall under the general categories of management tools, rehabilitation and restoration, scientific sites and new partnerships. Better known cases include the Littoral Forests in Madagascar (QMM), Wetland recovery in Australia (BHP Billiton), Bushmanland Conservation Initiative in South Africa (Anglo American) and the Tuktusiuqvialuk National Park in Canada (Mining Association of Canada).
The case studies illustrate what can be done by the mining sector but they also illustrate that there are many other mining companies that still need to be integrated into the policy thinking.
