Many companies have invested heavily in time and money to increase their corporate governance initiatives and improve their regulatory compliance. However, in many cases, this does not seem to have been well recognised by stakeholders and there continues to be criticism of poor accountability or insufficient transparency.

The World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) initiated a review of this phenomenon and a study was undertaken to explore ways and means of improving the situation.

This resulting report pulls together many experiences and gives a range of suggestions and ideas, which help organisations, go beyond basic reporting and build relationships and communication with key stakeholders.

The bottom line seems to be that each organisation has to examine its own unique circumstances and develop strategies and responses, which react to stakeholder issues, questions and concerns. There are no mind blowing new ideas in this publication but it does give some new perspectives of presenting information and also helps organisations to structure their responses by presenting the information and options in easily manageable formats and structures. One simple table on Mapping Accountability was very useful in spelling out the “hows” and “whys” of many issues confronting business.
