This is an excellent source of information and motivation for social and environmental improvements in businesses as it is based upon some 240 case studies from Africa, Asia, Latin America and Central and Eastern Europe. The examples are very useful and illustrate clearly many of the concepts presented in the book.

The book consists of an Executive Summary, Chapter 1 – Identifying the business case, Chapter 2 – The best opportunities, Chapter 3 – The diversity of the business case, Chapter 4 – Getting started on sustainability, Chapter 5 – Roles for other players, and Chapter 6 – Six themes. Also included is a list of Centres of Excellence (no basis included as to why they are considered so), a glossary (which I think could have been usefully expanded with a few more terms used in the text), three dull Forewords and some very useful endnotes and references with excellent website addresses to follow up on specifics in the text.

What I don’t like about this book is its poor design and layout which makes it difficult to get around the publication, despite the quick “entry points” page at the front. One needs to get used to the layout of the book and use it frequently to get the best from its contents. Recommended but be prepared to persevere to get what you want.
